The Mtwara Depot Expansion is a major upgrade transforming the facility from its original 5,000 m³ capacity into a modern, high-volume petroleum storage and distribution hub. This flagship project includes four new 15-metre-diameter vertical storage tanks built to API 650 standards and a fully automated truck loading gantry engineered for high-throughput operations.
Technical Highlights
- Tankage: Four new steel-welded tanks with internal floating roofs to minimize vapour losses and preserve product quality.
- Product Handling: Dedicated manifolds and bottom-loading arms for faster, safer, and environmentally compliant truck loading.
- Fire Protection: Performance-based firefighting system with optimized water/foam delivery, including modular K42 roof cooling nozzles and bund pourers.
- Instrumentation: Integrated tank gauging with radar level transmitters, overfill protection, and temperature compensation.
- Civil Works: New bund walls, secondary containment, and upgraded access roads designed to handle increased truck movements.
Current Status
- Tank construction and hydrotesting completed; painting and insulation underway.
- Truck loading gantry equipment delivered, installation in progress.
- Firewater tank and pump house completed; system commissioning scheduled for Q4 2025.
Once operational, the expanded depot will establish Mtwara as a key petroleum supply point for southern Tanzania and neighboring markets in Mozambique and Malawi.
